Accessed via Highway 14 out of Grangeville Idaho via the winding Mount Idaho Grade Road, travelers can optionally take State Highway 13 from Grangeville’s Main Street, straight east toward Harpster, and then a sharp right turn where Hwy 14 begins at the bottom, following the scenic South Fork of the Clearwater River southeast toward Elk City, Red River and Dixie.
The South Fork of the Clearwater river flows along Hwy 14 approximately 55 to 65 miles (depending on the route out of Grangeville, to where the Red River and South Fork Clearwater River intersect. Taking a jog to the right on Red River Road before you drive into Elk City, you’ll travel toward Red River Ranger Station where a large meadow opens up on your right as you drive along this beautiful landscape, with many opportunities to see random wildlife roaming.
At the Red River Ranger Station, a right turn takes you onward toward the town of Dixie where there is a small rugged landing strip for private planes and many homes, cabins and outfitters lodgings.
